Night in Oaxaca is MICOP's biggest and brightest annual fundraiser! We are proud to report that each year our event has grown and has become more successful and more popular than the year before! Funds raised at our event go directly to support our indigenous families with programs such as literacy classes for adults, a youth group encouraging higher education for teens, humanitarian assistance for families in dire need, and radio programming that reaches thousands of people in Ventura County every day. We have been told that Night in Oaxaca is the best fundraiser event in Ventura County!
Indigenous Knowledge Conference
MICOP’s Indigenous Knowledge Conference is a stimulating day of presentations to learn more about the indigenous Mexican community and US indigenous communities. During the event, participants attend three workshops of their choice. Previous conference workshops have included: “Promete Protejer(te): Creative Resilience, Adaptation, and Healing,” “Anda Na’ Kuachi Na Chio – Healing Together – Curamos Juntos,” “Uniting Indigenous Voices and Hearts for a personal, familial and social healing: Best Practices and Evaluation on Community Defined Interventions,” “Sacred Land/Sacred Body: Indigenous Reproductive Justice,” and more!
Tequio Rising
MICOP’s annual event benefiting the Tequio Scholarship Fund, a scholarship available to indigenous students in Ventura and Santa Barbara County. Your continued support to indigenous youth helps make their higher education goals a reality.
Guelaguetza
Meaning ‘offering’ in the Zapoteco language , Guelaguetza is a word that far exceeds the notions of regalia and festivities. In traditional Oaxacan villages, each person’s ‘offering’ is what makes the celebration happen. This event predates Hispanic influence and MICOP’s Guelaguetza included parades dances by Ballet Folklorico Nueva Antequera, Grupo Folklorico Huaxyaca, Diablos Elejidos de Asis, Rubios Agua Azul, and Las Chinas Oaxaqueñas Las Isabeles, the music of Maqueos Music, Banda Atoyac and Banda Corona, food from local vendors and artisanal crafts.
Dia de los Muertos
MICOP hosts our Dia de Muertos event, “Noche de Altares.” We typically have over 600 attendees at Heritage Square in downtown Oxnard, and our program includes live chilena bands, Danza Mexica Cuauhtémoc, Danza de Las Piñas, Chinas Oaxaqueñas, Danza de Los Viejitos and Danza de Los Diablitos, and an altar competition!
