Radio Indigena 94.1 FM

MICOP began its radio station, Radio Indígena 94.1, as an online-only access station in 2014. Three years later, the organization was able to raise enough funds to buy its own antenna and achieve the dream of having a low-powered FM station. Since its inception, Radio Indígena has been utilized as the strongest and most effective outreach and organizing tool for the indigenous, immigrant, and farmworker communities. Due to their lower educational attainment and long hours in manual labor, farmworkers rely heavily on radio for information and entertainment. Radio Indígena attempts to merge the two to provide programming that is easy to understand and digest in a Spanish that is 4th-6thgrade level. Radio Indígena’s unique value proposition lies in the additional programming that it is able to provide in at least seven Mixteco languages, Zapoteco, and Purepecha. As we train farmworkers who speak other indigenous languages as volunteer DJs, we expand our language base and reach, connecting other isolated indigenous families to services and programs that they would otherwise know very little about.

Radio Indígena 94.1 FM KIND-LP currently hosts 28 hours of weekly live programming, with 19 live radio shows ranging in topics from community organizing, healthcare access and mental health, self-help and wellbeing, as well as native indigenous musical programs. In 2023, we have added and launched new programs: "Justicia y Dignidad," and "La Hora del Inmigrante." Also, our radio program has launched a new Indigenous journalism, art, and Youth Suicide Prevention programs for the benefit of our listeners and community. Radio Indígena's educational and musical selection captures and defines our philosophy and culture.
