MICOP envía las primeras tarjetas de asistencia al inmigrante DRAI – MICOP sends off the first DRAI immigrant assistance cards

Recently, the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) authorized the Mixteco/ Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) to support 5,500 people eligible for financial support under the Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants (DRAI) program in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. MICOP was chosen because of our previous contracts, our presence in the region for the past 20 years, and our linguistic ability to serve the immigrant community that speaks Spanish, Mixtec, and English. Visit www.mixteco.org/drai for more information on whether you are eligible.

During the first week of the DRAI program implementation, we received a total of 85,000 calls. We recognize that the need is great and that the total number of calls we have received is tangible proof of the need. Today we have mailed the first DRAI Immigrant Assistance Cards for the first group of people who have been eligible. We will continue to support the community with their application until the funds are spent or until June 30, 2020 at the latest.

Day by day, there are thousands of calls received on our phone lines. We ask our community to remain calm and keep trying for those who are still looking to apply. We appreciate your patience in our efforts.

The MICOP team is very proud to be part of this historic project in the state of California. For the first time in history in this country, the state of California allocates relief funds to the undocumented community. We celebrate this initiative, but we recognize that this is only a first step. We recognize that between these funds, and the funds of our other project (805 UndocuFund) do not cover the inequality that exists in our undocumented communities and are in a way only a “band-aid.” Therefore, MICOP will continue our work to advocate for additional resources for our community. Our community has always been “essential.” The 3 million undocumented Californians deserve #SafetyNetParaTodos.
