POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Labor Advocate
REPORTS TO: Senior Community Organizer
ANNUAL SALARY: $18/hour – 19/hour
Hour per week: 30hrs/week (Dental, Health insurance, PTO, & 10 holidays)
Organization Summary:
Founded in 2001, Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) aids, organizes and empowers Ventura County’s indigenous immigrant communities through improved access to health and community resources, community organizing and advocacy, education, direct assistance, cultural promotion, and Radio Indígena.
Position Summary:
The Labor Advocate is responsible for developing trust within the farmworker community to identify unpaid wage cases to be investigated and prosecuted by the Labor Commissioner. Also he/she is responsible to engage in strategic collaboration with the Labor Commissioner office to scale up strategic enforcement and to build and deepen community and public partnership. The Labor Advocate builds and strengthens collaboration with CA Labor regulators agencies and farmworker community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build trust among local farmworker and engage them through visits to agricultural fields, churches, community centers and homes
- Build and strengthen collaboration with CA Labor Commissioner
- Participate in monthly calls and annual convening
- Identify unpaid wage cases within the farmworker community in Ventura County
- Build a strong public and private partnership model for strategic enforcement
- Work closely with MICOP’s community organizers
- Host Radio weekly programing to reach and provide relevant labor law education to farmworkers
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Arts or equivalent experience required
- Commitment to MICOP’s mission
- Must be able to inspire others to believe in a cause and to volunteer their time and effort to work towards it
- Group facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Genuine commitment to addressing community issues
- Must understand the political process and government structures
- Must be able to work weekends and evenings and have reliable transportation
- Strong computer skills needed
- Bilingual Spanish-English skills required
- Mixteco language skills preferred
