Literacy and Education (Plaza Comunitaria)

MICOP believes that education is a key to future achievement. Pre-school enrichment, school entry and retention, adult English and Spanish literacy, and citizenship promotion are all areas of current MICOP focus.

Plaza Comunitaria offers literacy classes to adults above the age of 15 who wish to continue their primary and secondary education. Students work through curriculum from INEA (Instituto Nacional para la Educación de los Adultos) and are lead by two instructors. Students can receive Mexican elementary and secondary graduation equivalencies. Literacy classes are taught 4 nights per week for all levels.

Plaza Comunitaria holds classes:

The Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project is looking for volunteers to help with our increasingly popular literacy program. We seek volunteers who speak Mixtec or Zapotec languages to teach reading and writing to members of the community.

Plaza Comunitaria also seeks pencils (not pens), notebooks, backpacks, dry-erase markers, a large white board and two new folding tables.
