Oxnard Guelaguetza Festival 2019!

Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) is inviting the public to attend its 2nd Oxnard Guelaguetza Festival in June 30th, 2019 from 10am – 5pm at Plaza Park in Oxnard: 500 S. C Street, Oxnard, CA 93030.

MICOP (Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project) was founded in 2001 “to support and encourage the empowerment of the Oaxacan immigrant community in Ventura County.” MICOP provides direct service to over 8,000 unduplicated Oaxacan immigrant men, women, and children each year, sponsors cultural events to keep alive the rich Mixteco cultural traditions, and organizes and trains the Mixteco community to become self-sufficient, successful members of the broader community. According to statewide evaluators, our programs and advocacy in Ventura County have created the state’s most advanced network of services available to indigenous farm workers.

Oaxaca state in southern Mexico is renowned for its vibrant culture, inspired by the ancient music, art and dance of the state’s huge indigenous population. Each of the state’s eight regions has distinct music, dance, clothing and art. The Guelaguetza festival is Oaxaca’s biggest and most popular celebration of regional music and culture. It began in Oaxaca City in 1932 as a way to unite the cultures of Oaxaca State (of which the Mixtecos are one) in a common celebration of their varied rich cultures. Our project objective is to establish Guelaguetza as an annual tradition for all residents in Ventura County, including over 24,000 Oaxacans who call the area home.

MICOP staged the first Guelaguetza in Oxnard in September 2007. It drew 500 people to an amphitheater in Oxnard to witness the spectacle of a large brass banda (who played each of the region’s unique songs), and several dozen dancers performing the unique dances of each of Oaxaca’s eight regions (please see enclosed flyers and photos). Vendors sold traditional food and art. The event was a great success—much-loved by all who attended—and we expect it will become a popular annual event that draws thousands of Oaxacans, music lovers, musicians, dance aficionados, academics and more.

MICOP is bringing back this magnificent Oaxacan cultural event to downtown Oxnard in Plaza Park on June 30, 2019. Families will enjoy delicious food and handmade art from El Fortin Restaurant, Tatianas Restaurant, Tlacolula Restaurant, Del Rio Discount Store, Artesanias Aztlan, Artesanias Mexicana, and others.

Indigenous dancers from Ballet Folklorico Nueva Antequera, Grupo Folklorico Huaxyaca, Diablos Elejidos de Asis and Rubios Agua Azul will give a magical and colorful presentation of the Oaxacan culture. Traditional music will be provided by Maqueos Music, Banda Atoyac and Banda Corona.

We welcome donations to make future events like this possible.  To donate to the fund, please send checks to “MICOP” with “Oxnard Guelaguetza Festival” in the memo, to P.O. Box 20543, Oxnard, CA 93034, or donate online at www.mixteco.org/donate.
