Monthly Community Meeting

MICOP's monthly community meetings are a great place to get involved and meet the MICOP staff and community members. Each meeting has a theme where we share information that is relevant to the indigenous community. We discuss immigration, driver's licenses, health and education, among other topics. We also incorporate cultural events into the yearly  meetings, including Dia de los Niños, Dia de las Madres, Dia de los Muertos and End of the Year celebration. Mujeres Indígenas Avanzando Juntas

MICOP has partnered with the Women’s Foundation of California’s Bridge to Living Wage Initiative to train Mixteco and Zapoteco speakers to enter the healthcare workforce.  MICOP is training a cadre of 15 women to be medical interpreters and health promotores, and will partner with area clinics to provide shadowing experiences of professional interpreters and promotores.  Trainees recently completed their 40-hour medical interpreter training by Lourdes Cerna, an experienced instructor with the California Healthcare Interpreter Association.  MICOP is also launching an Indigenous Interpreters Network to provide professional support.

Voz de la Mujer Indígena

MICOP’s Blue Shield of California Foundation training program, Voz de la Mujer Indigena, accepts only survivors of domestic abuse into this peer promotora program.  All 10 trainees are graduates of MICOP’s domestic violence support group, Living with Love, and all have achieved stability in their lives following the experience of domestic violence.  Trainees learn to speak of their own experience to other indigenous men and women, encouraging families to seek support if they are experiencing similar violence.  Through Voz de la Mujer Indigena, MICOP is also building a network to support Ventura County’s domestic violence providers in reaching ...
